When renewal fees are due
To keep a granted patent in force, you pay annual renewal fees to the Indian Patent Office. Renewal year N is due on the (N−1)th anniversary of filing — for example, year 4 is due three years after filing.
Miss a renewal and the patent can lapse. After grant, you may still have a short window to ask for more time. Use this calculator for planning, then track live renewals per case in IPR Manager.
Common questions
- When do patent renewals start in India?
- Renewals are payable from the third year after grant. Year 3 is due on the second anniversary of the filing date.
- What if I miss a renewal payment?
- After grant, you can often ask for more time by filing Form 4 — commonly up to six months after the due date, with a fee. Do not treat that as automatic. Confirm current process with a registered patent agent.
- How long do I need to keep paying?
- Usually every year through year 20 to keep the patent in force, subject to current rules and fees.
IPR Manager is a software platform only. AI tools speed up drafting, but every section, claim, and form stays a draft until you review and confirm it. We do not provide legal advice, patentability opinions, filing services, government-fee collection, or representation before the Indian Patent Office.
