Deadlines you should not miss

Indian patent dates run from your filing and priority dates. Miss one and you can lose an application or let a granted patent lapse. The dates people watch most are complete specification after provisional (12 months), publication (~18 months), request for examination (Form 18), and renewals from year 3.

Form 18 timing depends on when you filed. Applications filed on or after 15 March 2024 usually have a 31-month window; older filings may have 48 months. Match the calculator to your filing receipt.

Still need more time?

For some dates, you can ask the Patent Office for more time by filing Form 4 — often up to six months after the due date (three months for Form 3). A fee applies, and the request must go in before that last day.

This calculator highlights that last day next to dates where it commonly applies. It does not treat Form 18, complete specification after provisional, or PCT national phase entry as safely fixable with Form 4.

Track every matter in one place

A one-off calculator helps at filing time. Dates keep moving as your case progresses. IPR Manager keeps statutory and renewal dates current from your live case data — hearings, FER replies, and grants included.

Common questions

When do I need to request examination (Form 18)?
For applications filed on or after 15 March 2024, you generally have 31 months from filing. Older filings often have 48 months. Always match this to your filing receipt.
What if I miss a deadline — can Form 4 help?
For some deadlines, you can ask the Patent Office for more time by filing Form 4, often up to a few months after the due date. Extra fees apply, and it is not guaranteed. Deadlines like Form 18, complete specification after provisional, and late PCT entry are usually not safe to fix this way — talk to a registered patent agent.
When is PCT national phase due in India?
Usually 31 months from the earliest priority date.
When is the first renewal due?
Renewals start from year 3. Year 3 is due on the second anniversary of filing. After grant, you may still have a short window to ask for more time — confirm fees and process with your agent.
When is my application published?
Usually around 18 months from the earliest priority or filing date, unless you request early publication.
Is this legal advice?
No. These dates are for planning. Confirm with a registered patent agent for your matter.
